On May 15, 2024, Benin officially launched its National Action Plan for the Circular Economy, supported by the African Development Bank (AfDB) through the Africa Circular Economy Facility (ACEF). Developed in partnership with the African Circular Economy Alliance (ACEA), this initiative aims to help Benin meet its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) by adopting a more sustainable and responsible approach to natural resource utilization.
The action plan, developed with input from a wide range of stakeholders, engages the Beninese government, businesses, and civil society in a collaborative effort to promote an ethical and optimized use of resources while fostering sustainable and inclusive growth.
This initiative will establish a favorable framework for harnessing the full benefits of the circular economy, setting a dedicated roadmap for its implementation. By adopting this plan, Benin joins Cameroon, Chad, Ethiopia, and Uganda in advancing towards the circularity of their economies.
Ambitious Goals for Climate Action
Benin aims to effectively address climate challenges by strengthening its NDC commitments, which include a 7.8% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2045 and an accelerated development of renewable energies, expected to constitute 20-30% of the national energy mix.
"The action plan for the circular economy will bring significant benefits to Benin, including job creation and the potential development of young Beninese talents, while opening up favorable prospects in key sectors," said Pépin Aïna, Director General of Environment and Climate at Benin's Ministry of Living Environment and Sustainable Development.
Sector-Focused Roadmap
The roadmap will be developed for eleven identified sectors, including waste management, water, agri-food, construction, textiles, transportation and mobility, information and communication technologies, electronics, plastics, and chemicals related to plastics. Tourism, mining, and raw materials are also targeted sectors.
ACEA and ACEF are at the forefront of promoting the circular economy as a sustainable development strategy for Africa. Their efforts are crucial in positioning the circular economy as a key driver of green growth across the continent, in harmony with global environmental goals.
